Hi, Joel here.

My name is Joel Christian Broberg*, the soul behind In Retɻoflect**. I began this blog to document my experiences while studying abroad in Costa Rica in 2021. The blog quickly morphed into a chronicle of my journey as an undergrad, navigating the ups and downs of linguistics, language learning, faith, and liberal arts education.

A Black Hills bassoonist turned Twin Cities linguist.

I grew up in the Black Hills—the sacred land of the Oceti Sakowin—of South Dakota. I am currently a seniors Eagle Scholar at the University of Northwestern – St. Paul, a Christian liberal arts school in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. I'm studying theology, linguistics, and a handful of languages: English, Spanish, Greek, Hebrew, and music. I enjoy coffee, bassoonery, cardigans, unicycling, eclipse chasing, and exploring the relationships between different disciplines of knowledge.

* That's יוֹאֵל Χριστιάνος Bråberg, in its three source languages (Hebrew, Greek, and Swedish).

** In Retɻoflect is a phonetics pun. I'd love to explain it if you're looking for an icebreaker.
